Contemporary slavery in armed conflict: Introducing the CSAC dataset, 1989–2016

We introduce a new dataset, Contemporary Slavery in Armed Conflict (CSAC), coding instances and types of enslavement armed conflict from 1989 to 2016, building on Uppsala Data Program data. CSAC currently covers 171 conflicts with the unit analysis being conflict-year. identify different within these find that 87% contained incidences child soldiers, 34% included sexual exploitation/forced marriage, 23% forced labor, 16% human trafficking. The use support strategic aims is also identified found about 17% cases. Next, drawing upon key variables Program, we present series cross-tabulations looking at presence slavery broken down by incompatibility, intensity level, type. see as step toward generating greater understanding when how state non-state actors conflict, goal mitigating possibly eradicating warfare.
